Empowered to Save, Inspired to Dream
Nang Sanda Oo, a 23-year-old from Kayin State, attended Safe Migration and Financial Literacy training provided by IOM and its partners. Before the training, she had no idea about safe and orderly migration. However, one of her dreams has always been to study or work abroad, and she realized how valuable this knowledge would be for her future.
Reflecting on her financial literacy lessons, Nang Sanda Oo shared how she applied her new skills. “After the training, my friend and I decided to go out to eat less and save money. We practiced that for two weeks,” she explained. One lesson that really stuck with her was the P5 concept, which is used in marketing strategies.
While her dream is to study abroad, Nang Sanda Oo acknowledges that the current circumstances in Myanmar make this challenging. As an alternative, she hopes to open a juice shop one day, inspired by her love for juice and the hot weather in Myanmar, which makes it a refreshing and practical idea.
At the moment, she is volunteering at her local learning center, contributing to her community while putting her skills to good use. She fondly remembers her training experience, sharing how much she enjoyed the games that allowed her to bond with fellow participants. “It was such a memorable moment, full of laughter,” she recalled.
The training not only changed Nang Sanda Oo’s perspective on migration but also gave her a new appreciation for how safe and beneficial migration can be when done correctly. With the knowledge she gained, she plans to pursue her goal of studying abroad and to share this valuable information, starting with her relatives.
Looking ahead, Nang Sanda Oo expressed her hope for more opportunities like this, particularly in her community. “This was my first time attending such a valuable training, and I’m sure many people in my community have never heard of this. It would be so helpful for us,” she said. Additionally, she hopes for future training in accounting, which she believes would greatly benefit young people in her community.
